As the year comes to a close, we are highlighting a standout release from Syos artist James Morton, whose work blends deep groove, emotional clarity, and rhythmic drive. James Morton’s Groove Den – Live in London captures the energy of a band locked in and in full command of their sound. The embedded video at the top of this page offers a taste of the live show, featuring James performing with his Syos mouthpiece.
Groove Den is the collaborative brainchild of James Morton, a leading figure in Bristol’s music scene and one of the most exciting saxophonists of his generation. Drawing on jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, and rock, the group is unified by its dedication to groove and feel. The Live in London album showcases this blend in full form, with tight ensemble playing, explosive solos, and velvety musical textures. It’s a sexy set that moves seamlessly from heavy-hitting funk to soulful melodic passages. The mix is so refined and pristine, you might mistake it for a studio album until the audience cheering and hollering between songs reminds you that this is in fact a live recording.
Over the course of his career, James has performed and recorded with a long list of iconic artists including Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and The New JB’s, George Clinton, Kasabian, Pendulum and the NPG Horns from Prince’s band. He has also released two critically acclaimed albums as a leader: Don’t You Worry ‘Bout That and The Kid.
Groove Den is made up of musicians who each bring their own creative voice to the mix. Guitarist Alex Hutchings is known for his expressive playing and technical brilliance, and has built an international reputation for his live shows. On drums, Francesco Medolia, known for his work with funk supergroup Incognito, provides the rhythmic core. Hammond organist Anders Olinder, a frequent collaborator with Glenn Hughes and Pee Wee Ellis, adds additional harmonic textures and depth.
